Rebirth - JustUs Journal
The Summer after the murder of George Floyd by police office Derek Chauvin in May 2020, there was a rise in deaths of Black people at the hands of the police.
20 in 20 is an art installation project curated by Doc. The initial 20 in 20 project was commissioned by the Academic Senate for Community Colleges in California.
The ASCCC was Intrigued by Doc’s larger exhibit, Homage, which chronicled Black deaths by police from 2014 – 2019. After reading about the installation, the organization reached out with a request to use photo documentation from the exhibit.
Inspired by the moment, Doc created 20 in 20 and specifically highlighted 20 individuals who were killed in 2020. Photo documentation of this installation was featured during the ASCCC Fall Plenary as a form of digital advocacy supporting conversations rooted in antiracism, allyship, equity and inclusion among California Community College Faculty.
ReGrowth
20 in 20 Regrowth brings new light to this conversation. Using photo editing techniques, Doc applies a digital collage approach to honoring these Black lives. Adding flowers that stem from these headstones is a reminder of new growth and possibilities. Out of death, comes life.
While the black and white paper máche headstones become a looming wall, the beauty of flowers remind us of the love and care invested in this life and the beyond.
JustUs Journals
JustUs Journals are a collection of journals, planners, and content creation workbooks designed to keep us personally grounded, culturally centered, and socially creative. We aimed to combine the best components of bullet journaling with our need to plan and ideate simultaneously.
Whether you are a writer who needs lines to fill with words, an artist who expresses oneself through a blank page, someone who brainstorms on dotted paper, or a content creator for social media—there’s a JustUs Journal for you.
